AW21 Trends – ‘Micro Minis’
Fashion, as a whole, has gone under the shrink ray, resulting in a wide range of skirts not safe for work or the autumn/winter wind either. Given how long we all spent wearing sweats and the like during what felt like a never ending lockdown, it would seem that extreme leg-baring mini skirts is exactly what we all needed.
First hinting at their comeback on the catwalks of designers such as Saint Laurent and Miu Miu, micro minis have since quickly made their way onto the shelves of high street brands as well, seeing a number of mini styles sell out. Klarna, the buy-now-pay-later platform, reported in July that they saw a 67% increase in searches for mini skirts compared to just one month before in June.
The micro mini is yet another autumn/winter 21 trend reminiscent of the Y2K-era, these tiny silhouettes were once beloved by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Rihanna and Britney Spears. However, with his trends return in 2021 it seems to have lost two components that used to drive it; sex appeal and hyper-femininity. Refreshingly, the mini skirt today is all about dressing for yourself and not just to satisfy the male gaze.
